But here is the story before all that could happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">JAWA is brain child of Law-Kims therapy services offered by Lawrence Kimathi. That started in 2004 with the main aim of providing occupational therapy services to children who in one way the other were unable to receive therapeutic services from established institutions in Kenya\u2019s capital city, Nairobi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Then I was working for five years in a full time job at Challenge programme \u2013 a day care centre for children with special needs, also in Nairobi. This experience was an eye opener. I got highly motivated from the &nbsp;impact and the changes that I was able to make to those children that I was serving and with whom even to date are my inspiration and part of me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">In the same year (2007) I joined SEP (special education Professionals) as a part time therapist. It was during this period that I was able to visit slums like Mukuru, kariobangi and others. My skills were sharpened and my eyes were opened. I was involved in sensitizing and creating awareness through workshops and training organised by SEP.&nbsp; It was a rewarding and satisfactory job and I was happy and I enjoyed being part of SEP though I kept thinking of how I could make greater impact to children with special needs especially those leaving in the rural areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">In March 2008 was offered a job in Sultan bin Abdul-Aziz Humanitarian city, in Ryhad, the capital of Saoudi Arabia. I joined the institution as an Occupational Therapist working at a children development centre. &nbsp;From that moment, it was &nbsp;my desire to start working towards my dream of giving back to the community I grow up in, a center fo children with special needs in my own neighbourhood. After eight months working in Saoudi Arabia I bought the land in Nkubu where JAWA is standing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">The foundation stone of JAWA was laid on 10\/01\/2010 and we started establishing the centre. We opened the doors for children in September 2011. JAWA was registered under The Name JAWA Society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Since 2011 we partner with a Belgian organisation, called Het Doetertoe, which means \u2018it matters\u2019. Together we collaborate in many ways to make JAWA grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">It is a journey worth walking irrespective of ups and downs. I believe there is light at the end of the tunnel. JAWA believes that all children are equal and deserve equal opportunities and more so those with special needs.
